What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic ServicesDoctors of Chiropractic focus on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous system as well as the effects of these disorders on general health and wellness. Chiropractic is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, disc herniation, degenerative disc and joint disease, radiating pain and sciatica symptoms, soft tissue injuries of the spine and extremities, and headaches. Chiropractors practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnostic testing, imaging, diagnosis, and personalized treatment plans. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle monitoring and counseling.

The most common therapeutic procedure performed by Doctors of Chiropractic is known as spinal manipulation therapy, also called a Chiropractic adjustment. The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile - or restricted in their movement - as a result of an injury. This may be due to tissue injury, trauma, or repetitive microtrauma. In any case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished overall function and mobility. Adjustments and manipulation of the affected joint and tissues restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle splinting and spasm, eventually giving your body a chance to heal normally and function effectively again.

Chiropractic is a safe and a minimally invasive option for your pain. Patients may sometimes report some mild post-therapy soreness or aching that will usually resolve in the next day or two. You will also be sent home with active and passive care instructions that may be a combination of some ice or heat, stretching, and therapeutic exercises.

Your Chiropractor will make the decision whether or not you are a candidate for spinal manipulative therapy. Chiropractors may choose to refer patients to the next best health care provider when Chiropractic care is not suitable for your specific condition or your condition warrants co-management with other members of the local medical community, the most common being Primary Care Physicians, and specialists such as Orthopedics, Pain Management, and spine surgeons. The Chiropractors at Integrative Pain & Wellness Associates have unique subspecialties to offer and their ultimate goal is to rehabilitate their patients using the least invasive methods possible first.  We treat all types of spine disorders including those patients who have already had surgical intervention such as fusion, and who continue to have chronic pain.  We have specialized tables and techniques for those who have failed neck and back surgeries and chronic pain.

Dr. Carlino is now accepting new patients for both neurological evaluations and diagnostic testing as well as Chiropractic rehabilitation.
